Practicing on a clean Yoga mat always was a good idea. It is a way to follow Saucha (the niyama of cleanliness). We have to take into account also that in a normal practice, every part of our body including our face is very likely to have a good dose of contact with our mat. And, if we add the Covid19 pandemic to the equation, keeping our mats properly clean becomes a total must.

We want to review with you which procedures we can apply to clean your yoga mat at home, from the simple ones, to the deeper and more effective.

  1. Brushing can be the base: The first basic step to remove the dust, hairs and other pieces of dirt accumulated on the mat is a gentle brushing with a clean soft bristles brush. This is a simple and basic care that of course needs to be complemented so we can remove sweat, body oil and also virus and bacteria.

  2. Spray and wipe: Next step, to perform a deeper cleansing is to wipe it with preferably a microfiber cloth. Now regarding which liquid to spray there are different options: Some brands sell their own sprays. Some people recommend using white vinegar diluted but it´s not the best option for the smell. A dash of dishwashing soap in water will do wonders as a liquid to spray. Just remember to wipe out any rest of soap with plain water so the grip doesn’t get affected.

  3. Washing the mat: This is the cleaner option and gives you the best results. Of course its very dependent on your mat material. If your mat is not machine washable you can soak it in a tub with a mild detergent, rinse it and let it dry. If your mat is machine washable (like the 247yogamats collection), then the process is simpler. Just toss it in the washing machine, use a cold program and detergent (don’t softener) and you will get your mat deep cleaned. For a better result and disinfection you can hang under the sun, since UV rays help in sanitizing.

So now that you have learnt how to make your yoga mat cleaner, take into account that having to clean your mat is a good sign. It means you are practicing!
